This from Alan Hawley in Miyazaki Ken:
A friend of mine from Africa who runs a volunteer program for
international exchange has asked me to forward his message onto
perspective volunteers.
I myself worked as a volunteer in Africa before coming to Japan. I
worked with this organization on the slopes of Africa's highest
mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro (perhaps better known for its coffee).
The small village was just south of the border with Kenya and is
today in the grips of famine and food shortages, as is most of East
Africa.
For those who may be interested in volunteering and traveling to
East Africa to one of the most beautiful countries in the world,
with some of the kindest individuals you will meet, please give me
an email and I will put you in touch with my contact in Dar Es
Salaam. The camps are throughout the year and in different parts of
the country from Kilimanjaro, to Serengeti, to Zanzibar Island. I
have a list of the camps and dates I can forward to whoever may be
interested.

Hello Friends,
UVIKIUTA is a Youth Development organization involved in various
activities including cross cultural exchange programs. Since its
inception in 1994, International work camps program has become a
year around tradition for UVIKIUTA. Over the years, the work camps
program has served to enrich the lives of approximately 5,000 youths
through camp programmes fostering international understanding and
promoting ideas of peace, human rights, cultural diversity and
sustainable development.
This year UVIKIUTA has organized a series of International work
camps across the country. We are expecting to have volunteers from
various countries in the world where they will have an opportunity
to participate in community volunteer service in the communities.
Beside the community service, thematic workshops, intercultural
exchange programmes, field visits and discussions on global issues
will provide participants with opportunities to learn and challenge
themselves in a team environment while working towards a common goal.
We welcome applications from volunteers aged between 18- no limit,
who care about and have been actively involved in local community
projects aimed at stimulating social change. We sincerely hope that
you will let your friends and relatives know. Please let us know if
you need more information. Please find attached a calendar of
camps. The detailed project information is available as well on
request.
Sincerely yours,
