How to Transfer Car Ownership

Selling your Japanese car? Surprise, surprise, it involves a lot of paperwork and bureaucracy. Here are two illustrated guides to walk you through the process.

Leah did a great job at explaining this process. The scanned images were especially helpful. However, I just talked with the folks at the car registration place, and a lot of what’s on here does not apply to YELLOW PLATE (i.e. k-car) automobiles.

In order to transfer ownership of a YELLOW PLATE CAR, you only need the following:

    1. Inkan of both the buyer and the seller
    2. Car’s Shakkenshou
    3. The buyer’s juminhyou: not entirely sure what this is, think it’s a document that varifies your residency. It’s available at the local YAKUBA (town hall) or equivalent.
    4. A form or two available at the registration center (may be the ones in Leah’s article; not sure)
Note: to be on the safe side, bring your Driver’s License, IDP (if you have one still), and gaikokujin card.

    You do NOT need:

    1. Shakoshoumei, aka parking permission form (only white plates need this)
    2. Inkan Shoumei

Also, the Rikkuunkyoku only handles WHITE PLATE registration transfers. For YELLOW PLATES, go to the Keijidosha Kensakyokai(Phone: 0952.30.4078, Hours M-F, 9-11:30 and 13:00-15:30). Both are located on a narrow road across from KitaSagaYubinkyoku (North Saga Post Office). That’s the huge post office near the Saga Ken apartments.

Thanks again Leah. Not trying to make you lose face or anything here….just want to make sure that people get the info they need on what will surely be time consuming and disenchanting task.
